What is the PEGP exam?

The Πιστοποιητικό Επάρκειας Γνώσεων για Πολιτογράφηση (ΠΕΓΠ / PEGP, "Certificate of Adequate Knowledge for Naturalization") is Greece's official state exam on the Greek language and basic knowledge of Greece. It is generally required for people applying for Greek citizenship through naturalization, though some applicants are exempt under the law.

Who needs the certificate, and who is exempt?

  • Who takes it and how

The exam is organised by the Γενική Γραμματεία Ιθαγένειας (General Secretariat for Citizenship) at Greece's Ministry of Interior. It is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, through the official portal exetaseis-ithageneia.ypes.gr, where candidates submit their application (αίτηση) and the ministry publishes the official question bank (Τράπεζα Θεμάτων) that every exam paper is drawn from.

  • What the exam covers

The first part, «Θεματικές Ενότητες», covers four knowledge subjects: geography of Greece (70 questions in the bank), history of Greece (80), Greek culture (70), and political institutions, Θεσμοί του Πολιτεύματος (80). The second part tests Greek language skills. Written comprehension and production, «Κατανόηση και Παραγωγή Γραπτού Λόγου», means reading a text, doing exercises, and writing an essay from one of 100 official themes. Listening comprehension, «Κατανόηση Προφορικού Λόγου», uses 50 audio themes with questions. Spoken production, «Παραγωγή Προφορικού Λόγου», is a conversation with examiners based on one of 25 official picture themes.

  • Exam-day format and scoring

The written part runs 50 to 150 minutes depending on how many subjects a candidate takes, followed by a 15-minute break, then listening (12–15 minutes) and, after another break, an individual speaking exam (up to 15 minutes). The maximum score is 100 points: up to 40 for the four knowledge subjects (2 points per correct answer) and up to 60 for the Greek-language sections. A candidate passes with at least 70 out of 100 overall, provided they also score at least 40 out of 60 on the language sections and 20 out of 40 on the knowledge subjects.
